Help pets find their way home:

  • Bring the found pet to the Columbia Animal Shelter or to the animal shelter nearest where the pet was found. The Columbia Animal Shelter will not turn away any animal that has been found. Click here for the shelter location.

  • Place a found ad in your local newspaper. The State newspaper will list your found pet for free as a community service.

  • Post flyers around the area where the animal was found.

  • Check with residents and frequent visitors (postal carriers, paper carriers, etc.) to see if they know where the animal lives.

  • Check with local veterinarians and/or groomers to see if they recognize the animal.

  • Ask a veterinarian to scan the found pet for a microchip ID.

To reclaim your lost pet from the Columbia Animal Shelter, you must visit the shelter to identify and claim the animal. Like other public shelters, the Columbia Animal Shelter charges a redemption fee. It may also assess fines if City of Columbia pet ordinances were violated. City pet ordinances require that your pet be spayed/neutered (if not already) and also microchipped before redemption. Pet ordinances and redemption fees and fines are set by Columbia City Council.
