A lost pet is a crisis for your family. Below are suggestions to help you find your pet.

If your pet is lost:

  • ALWAYS visit the Columbia Animal Shelter. Verbal descriptions of lost pets can be widely interpreted. Visit the shelter every few days. Pets can wander for days before being brought to the shelter.

  • List your pet in the local newspaper. The State newspaper will list your lost pet for free as a community service.

  • Post flyers in your neighborhood describing your lost pet. You may even offer a reward.

  • Ask neighbors and those who frequent your neighborhood if they have seen your pet. Ask the postal carriers, the newspaper carrier and neighborhood children—they pay attention to animals.

  • Call area veterinary offices and boarding facilities to see if they have received calls about your pet.

  • Call other local animal protection organizations. Call the Columbia Animal Shelter at 776-PETS (7387) for phone numbers of such groups. Call the Columbia SPCA at 783-1267 to leave a lost pet report.

To reclaim your lost pet from the Columbia Animal Shelter, you must visit the shelter to identify and claim the animal. Like other public shelters, the Columbia Animal Shelter charges a redemption fee. It may also assess fines if City of Columbia pet ordinances were violated. City pet ordinances require that your pet be spayed/neutered (if not already) and also microchipped before redemption. Pet ordinances and redemption fees and fines are set by Columbia City Council.
